A word from Aimee Garcia, our WORDTheatre Campus 2024 Ambassador:

It is a true honor to help WORDTheatre promote storytelling and language arts education in schools, and on their website. Stories are so essential – they connect us, they make us feel less alone. Recently, I was in the hospital for 21 days taking care of a sick family member. We were there overnight for three weeks and it was very challenging and very disheartening. But the best part of the day, the thing that we looked forward to the most every single day, was popping in a movie. We watched Lily Tomlin in 80 For Brady, and Reservation Dogs. We laughed, we cried, we escaped, and we felt more connected to people we had never met and felt less alone. As a student, I learned best through stories. In high school, our chemistry teacher, Mr. Foran,  told us a story about a soldier who was trying to escape a prison camp during WWII.

“The young soldier reached for the fence, inches away from freedom, then he heard a click. He turned around, and he saw a rebel soldier pointing a gun at him. He begged for his life, saying ‘soldier, soldier please, soldier please don’t, soldier please don’t fire, soldier please don’t fire, soldier please don’t, soldier, please.”

And us high school students, we were captivated, we were wondering if this innocent soldier was going to get shot. Then Mr. Foran perked up and he said, “and that is the order in which electrons enter the orbitals:  S, SP, SPD, SPDF, SPDF, SPD, SP.” To this day, I will never forget the order that electrons enter the orbitals. And I’m sure that you all will not either. We retain this information because of a great story. WORDTheatre seeks to inspire the next generation of students to think big, to imagine possibilities, and to make sense of their experiences. I am so honored to be part of WORDTheatre as a Campus Ambassador.
